For those of you who read the title and rolled your eyes, like who honestly has time for a consistent routine, I get it, keeping a consistent beauty routine with everything else going on in your life can feel a little overwhelming at times. But here me out!
The main thing with a beauty routine is that you don’t want it to feel like a chore…like, great, another thing I need add to my life! So, in building a routine, figure out how best to incorporate a few steps at a time so it won’t feel like work and build up from there. If you don’t have a routine, my advice would be to work on being consistent with the basic three step routine first (cleanse, tone, moisturize) and IF you can, set aside one self care day in the week to exfoliate and mask and all that extra good stuff.
Great skin is not just based on good genes, like most things, good habits are a big part of skin looking fresh and moisturised. I can always tell a difference in my skin’s health if I’ve been slacking on my skin care, I’ll start noticing dullness in my overall appearance and sometimes a few breakouts. So, the 3 basic steps are non-negotiable for me now and here’s why:
Washing your face is important for removing any dirt that have accumulated and to also avoid any build up and purify your pores. I always try look for a cleanser that gently removes the dirt from my skin, as I find my skin easily gets stripped of its natural oils and it ends up feeling so tight. So, I’m always on the look out for hydrating cleansers or ones created for sensitive skins. I’ve recently been trying out cleansing oils, especially in my morning routine and my skin has been loving it.
Toners have thankfully evolved over the years. From alcohol based toners that would strip your skin of its oils to ones that work to balance the natural ph of your skin. This Kiehls Ultra facial toner is lovely and gentle and has become a staple in my beauty routine.
I initially thought serums were an unnecessary luxury but you know what, don’t knock it till you’ve tried it! This Estee Lauder advanced night repair was my entry into the world of serums and I haven’t looked back since. Serums seriously make a visible difference to your skin’s appearance because they have active ingredients like vitamin C that work miracles. I’ve recently added the day and night collagens from QMS cosmetics, check out a post I wrote about the products here, which have been such a great addition to my routine.
A moisturizer hydrates your skin and protects the natural oils found in your skin. Moisturizers become even more important as you get older as your skin finds it harder to retain moisture. I still really love this Clinque moisturizer as it still keeps my skin soft and hydrated.
I think the main thing about a routine is that it should feel easy, start small then think of adding other steps as you go along, who knows, one day you might be mastering the Korean ten step beauty routine, I kid!
